Many, even very well educated people do not know the difference between mental illness, intellectual disability and insanity. Mentally ill personas are born normal and have a disordered mind and no control over their thoughts and actions. They can be violent at times. They suffer depression and can’t come out of it easily. Mental illness can be treated successfully.
Intellectually disabled people are not insane. They are born with an under-developed intellectual ability – the damage to the brain cells is irreversible. With proper multi-sensory repetitive training and guidance, their productivity can be maximized to their potential and they can excel in various activities. There has to be a different methodology and process specific to their level of understanding, developed through their understanding.
This is particularly highlighted in all the AMBA CEEICs where visiting mainstream trainers are trained at the base center using the collective abilities of the intellectually challenged individuals. Lower degree of difficulty of learning is imparted by a youngster with lower intellectual ability; and as the difficulty of learning increases, the youngster selected has a higher capacity to impart training. The trainers also learn that too much information can be disastrous to the individual. In just four days, the mainstream trainers are ready to sit at the computer and begin the teaching process well within the specific limitations of each individual. The ability of the youngsters showcased in this regard is beyond mainstream comprehension.
